RepoElements
A periodic table for software systems, keeping measurement separate from interpretation.
Updated
Context
Understanding an unfamiliar repository means identifying its architectural elements, its dependencies, its computational primitives, and where it touches the outside world.
Constraint
When a model performs that teardown, measurement and judgment come back mixed in one answer. A count and an opinion look alike in prose, and once they are blended the reader cannot check either.
Contribution
I built RepoElements, which decomposes a repository into architectural elements, dependencies, primitives, external boundaries, and evidence-backed hypotheses, as a pipeline of separate stages rather than as a single pass.
Approach
Deterministic extraction is its own stage and its own tool: the baseline analyzer runs on the Python standard library alone, so its output is reproducible and dependency-free. Adversarial review and editorial writing are defined as later, separate stages, so interpretation is applied to the measurements rather than produced alongside them.
Outcome
The teardown yields numbers that can be checked and hypotheses that are labelled as hypotheses, instead of one confident narrative in which the two are indistinguishable.
Evidence
The work is held in a private repository. The first stage is implemented; the review and editorial stages are specified and named as planned.
