Inductor optimizer

Multi-objective inductor design driven by finite-element evaluation of each candidate.

Updated

Context

A power inductor is a compromise between inductance, loss, saturation margin, and size, and the compromise moves with every change to the operating point.

Constraint

Analytical models are fast but approximate near saturation and in the gap fringing field; finite-element models are accurate but too slow to sit inside a naive search unless the search is organized around them.

Contribution

I built a MATLAB and FEMM optimization tool that defines a design space, generates the geometry, solves it by finite elements, extracts inductance, losses, and flux density, and evaluates each candidate against explicit constraints.

Approach

The stages are separated on purpose: parameter setup, material definition, geometry generation, solve, evaluation, and visualization are distinct scripts, so the objective function and the constraints can be changed without disturbing the simulation path.

Outcome

The design that ships is the one that won a stated objective under stated constraints, and the run that chose it can be repeated.

Evidence

The public repository holds the optimization loop, the objective and constraint definitions, the FEMM geometry generator, and worked design cases.
